Career in Electrical Engineering

After the results of XIIth are declared, now the students has to select which stream they had to go. In Engineering field they are often confused while selecting the branch. There are lots of option in Engineering like Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, etc. Let us see Electric Engineering as a career option in Engineering.

Electric Engineering is one of the core branch of Engineering. It covers the study of Power from Nano scale to Mega Scale. It helps to understand how power is generated, transmitted and distributed. It is a branch that deals with concepts related to electricity and electric machinery such as Power generation, transmission and use of electricity, electromagnetism, equipment like generator, motors etc. The Electric Engineering branch is lucrative because electrical engineer is required in almost all the companies.

The Electric Engineering branch offers skills development in the areas like analytical thinking, ability to apply the knowledge to specific tasks, good project management skills, high end computing, teamwork, problem solving, interest in updating knowledge to meet job requirements, mathematical skill, and communication skill.

As a career option, there are many job for electrical engineer. Energy audit is always one of the best option after electrical engineering. As per the government policy, in every industry, energy audit is compulsory. Other than this various other options are available through GATE, in MSEB and in Core Companies.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam is conducted every year and has acceptance in several area of engineering i.e. higher study, Research Job, PSUs, etc. With valid gate score one can apply for higer study like M.Tech, M.S (Master of Science) etc in any reputed institute. One can also apply for research jobs like Junior Research Fellow, Senior Research Fellow in any reputed institute. Students can get 25,000 pm as JRF and 28,000 pm as SRF with HRA (House Rental Allowance).

There are lot of opportunities in Public Sector Undertaking. With valid GATE score students can apply for job in any PSUSs like BHEL, BSNL, CIL, GAIL, HAL(Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, IOCL, HPCL, NTPC, etc. All above PSUs provide attractive salaries. Bhabha Atomic Research Center also hires electrical engineers through GATE. MSEB, is another better career option for electrical engineers.

Electrical Engineers can have flourishing career in the sectors like Electronics, Power generation, Oil and gas, Marine, Materials and metals, Pharmaceuticals, Construction, Defense, Telecoms, Chemical Railway, Aerospace, Automotive, Utilities.

There are abundance of opportunity for eletrical engineer in various private IT & electrical companies in India. Companies in private sector that hire various skilled electrical engineers are Alstom, ABB, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Crompton Greaves Limited, Bajaj Electricals Ltd, Siemens India, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd., Spectrum Power Generation Limited, HBL, Power Systems Limited and many more. All IT companies also hire electrical engineers to develop the software related with Electric Field Company as they require depth knowledge of the field.

There are a large number of employment opportunities for electrical engineers in overseas. This is because of the presence of various manufacturing firms outside India. Electrical Engineers who are specialized in Control and Power Systems can find good opportunities in Japan, Germany, US & Korea. Electical Design Engineers also can try in multidisciplinary engineering consultancies.

There is a good scope for electrical engineering in coming days as more emphasis is given on solar and wind energy by government. As the modern life is completely dependent on electrical objects, electrical engineers have a great demand in allmost all fields. The job prospects are very high with or without post graduate degree. Having a post graduate degree will increase the prospects. India suppose to do a lot in infrastructure in coming 20-25 years and job opportunities for core field would be best so thinking to pursue electrical engineering is a great and flourishing data.
